Fishermen Stage Protest Outside Paradip Port Over Colleague’s Death

Fishermen from Sandhakuda staged a protest outside Paradip Port Gate No. 4 following the death of a 29-year-old fisherman, Lenka Apana. The fishermen alleged that a delay in getting access through the port prevented them from obtaining timely medical treatment for their colleague.   According to the report, five fishermen from Sandhakuda had gone to sea for fishing when their boat tilted after coming into contact with a tidal wave. Apana reportedly lost his balance, struck his chest against the boat and subsequently became ill and began vomiting.   As his condition worsened, the other fishermen reportedly attempted to take him through a Paradip Port berth because they believed it would provide faster access to medical assistance. The fishermen alleged that their request for entry was not permitted in time, leading to anger among members of the local fishing community.   Following his death, fishermen demonstrated with his body outside the port gate, seeking accountability over the incident. The protest brought attention to concerns surrounding emergency access and coordination for fishing communities operating near the Paradip Port area.

Rainfall Conditions Keep Jagatsinghpur and Odisha on Weather Watch

Weather conditions remained important across Odisha, including coastal districts such as Jagatsinghpur, during the opening days of September. National forecasts warned of periods of thunderstorms and heavy rainfall across Odisha and several other states as changing monsoon conditions affected different parts of the country. For Jagatsinghpur, rainfall has particular importance because the district contains extensive agricultural areas as well as low-lying and coastal communities. Periods of intense rainfall can affect local roads, drainage, farming activities and everyday travel, making short-term weather forecasts especially important for residents. The wider monsoon situation has also created agricultural concerns. September rainfall is particularly important for crops that are at critical growth stages and for maintaining soil moisture ahead of the winter cropping season. Nationally, below-average September rainfall has raised concerns about agricultural output and farm incomes. Residents should therefore follow official forecasts and district advisories when significant rain or thunderstorms are expected. Farmers, fishermen and people travelling through low-lying areas should pay particular attention to updated weather information because coastal conditions can change quickly.

Susanta Kumar Purohit Takes Charge as Paradip Port Authority Chairperson

Susanta Kumar Purohit assumed charge as Chairperson of Paradip Port Authority on September 1, 2026. The leadership change comes during a period of significant infrastructure development and capacity enhancement at one of Odisha’s most important maritime gateways. Soon after assuming charge, Purohit began engaging with senior Odisha government officials. On September 3, the Port Authority reported that the new Chairperson made courtesy calls on senior state officials with the aim of strengthening coordination on important maritime initiatives. His appointment coincides with several major developments at Paradip Port. On August 21, projects worth ₹427.80 crore were inaugurated at the port, while the port also highlighted an 18.5-metre deep-draft capability. In early September, it subsequently achieved another milestone by handling a 16.5-metre-draft Capesize vessel at Western Dock-1. The new leadership will therefore oversee Paradip Port during an important phase of modernization and maritime expansion. Continued coordination between the Port Authority, Odisha government and other stakeholders will be important as new infrastructure and logistics initiatives progress.

Paradip Port Achieves Historic Maritime Milestone

Paradip Port Authority (PPA) achieved a major operational milestone on September 6, 2026, by successfully berthing its first Capesize vessel with a draft of 16.5 metres at Western Dock-1. The achievement demonstrates the port’s increasing ability to accommodate large, deep-draft vessels and strengthens Paradip’s importance in India’s maritime sector.   The vessel, MV Mineral Kwangyang, measures 292 metres in length and 45 metres in breadth. It arrived at Paradip on September 5 and was successfully berthed at Western Dock-1 the following morning. The vessel was carrying 152,702 metric tonnes of coking coal from Hay Point, Australia.   Handling such a large vessel at Western Dock-1 reflects improvements in Paradip Port’s deep-draft capabilities. According to the Port Authority, accommodating larger-capacity bulk carriers can help improve logistics efficiency and reduce vessel turnaround times for major industrial users.   Paradip Port Authority Chairperson Susanta Kumar Purohit congratulated the PPA and Jindal Paradip Port Ltd. teams involved in the operation. The achievement comes as Paradip Port continues investing in infrastructure and operational capacity to meet the growing requirements of India’s maritime and industrial sectors.
